Friend Factory was started by Brooklyn musician Michael Dillenberger, and has since added Dan Platt on guitar, Eric Mendelson on bass and Daniel Gonzalez on drums. The new lineup debuted at Brooklyn’s Northside Festival this past June.
Friend Factory has recorded several albums, but they were really all just warm-ups for the current release, You’ll Get Nothing And Like It. The album takes everything Dillenberger has tried in the past and melds it seamlessly into one unified statement, each of its 11 songs painting a picture with sound. It’s the real deal.
It’s full of tight, structured songs, propelled by strong melodies. Guitars, bass & drums sit comfortably alongside casios, glockenspiels, mellotrons, tambourines & sound effects. Vocal harmonies are abundant, and the lyrics tell stories that are relatable, yet wholly original.
Standout cuts include “Mainstream Anthem“, “The Industry” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll,” which the blog Cover Me Songs calls “unexpectedly roaring” and “bombastic.” And My Old Kentucky Blog says, “Dillenberger puts some serious meat on Dylan’s bare-bones original, taking an ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ approach, without sacrificing much, if any, of the song’s power.
