Ikebe Shakedown plays with elements of cinematic soul, Afro-funk, deep disco, and boogaloo in all the right ways. After spending a few years together the group, named after a favorite Nigerian boogie record (and pronounced “ee-KAY-bay”), delivers a driving set of tunes featuring a mighty horn section anchored by tight, deep-pocketed grooves. Ikebe’s first full length LP and new single were released on Ubiquity Records over the summer of 2011. Recorded at Killion Sound in LA (Orgone) and at Dunham Studios in Brooklyn this was a follow up on a debut EP and several 45s released on Colemine Records. After a strong spring 2012 tour that brought Ikebe throughout the Northeast, into Canada, out to the Midwest, and back home to Brooklyn, the band is now working on their next album, with a new single due out in late summer.

Tropic of Pisces

Tropic of Pisces is the new project from multi-instrumentalist and singer Mathew Scheiner, bassist of Mon Khmer and more recently guitarist and glockenspieler for Oberhofer.

The project features Rubblebucket’s Dave Cole (drummer, coproducer)
and Colin Killalea of Yost (guitar, saxophone). TOP is currently wrapping up work on their debut effort, a foursong
EP titled “Symmetry”, which was recorded at home by Mathew and mixed with his help by father and Grammy/Emmy
award-winning recording engineer, Elliot Scheiner.

The band’s first show was in early October at Brooklyn’s Glasslands Gallery, met by a full house crowd twice the size of
that of the headliners, The Chain Gang of 1974. Since then they have headlined capacity shows with the likes of Steel Phantoms, Levek and other up and coming bands from around the country.

Jesse Mann has been sharing his love of music with dancefloors worldwide for over 12 years. All manner of funky and soulful music feature in his eclectic DJ sets–he’s been known to drop everything from shuffling Afrobeat to forgotten Funk classics, Disco gems, Deep House, and more in a single marathon set, seamlessly blending them together into one cohesive whole. Jesse has ignited dancefloors across the US and in Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Puerto Rico, and beyond. In his home base of NYC he’s played alongside such music legends as Afrika Bambaata, The Egyptian Lover, Matthew Dear, and LTJ Bukem, at storied NYC nightlife institutions such as Limelight, Cielo, Love, APT, The Standard Hotel, The Lunatarium, and 3rd Ward–among many others.

Jesse currently holds down a long-time residency DJing and booking live bands for Body Music, the intimate dance party at Bembe in Williamsburg–rocking every Sunday since 2005. There he mixes up the full spectrum of funked out rhythms alongside some of the most talented musicians in Brooklyn. It’s been called one of the “Top Sunday Parties” in NYC by Time Out NY (Feb. 2011)
